Trade Centers and Sport Centers in Asia
A brief overview of six projets protected by Kynar 500® resin-based coatings
This case study covers six beautiful Trade Centers and Sport Centers across in Asia with our partner of many years, Sherwin-Williams Asia.
They perfectly represent a wide range of projects for coil coating and extrusion coated metal.
The paint system with Kynar 500® PVDF resin was selected for a strong UV resistance, offering a long-life coating and an excellent aesthetic.
These six projects are:
- Shenzhen World Convention and Exhibition Center,
- Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre,
- Kai Tak Sport Park in Hong Kong,
- Natatorium of Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center,
- Infinitus Plaza in Guangzhou,
- Toppen Shopping Centre in Malaysia.

Shenzhen World Convention and Exhibition Center
Nearby the Shenzhen Airport, the Shenzhen
World Convention & Exhibition Center opened in 2019, with 19 halls covering 1.2 million square meters. The metal roof of the project is arranged in a
fishbone structure, like layers of surging waves, and is decorated with red ribbons of Shenzhen Flower Triangle Plum (Rhododendron) and mangrove shaped pillars. The project receives strong subtropical sunlight and coastal salt mist posing a challenge to the long-term weather resistance of coatings. For this reason, the designer chose a three-layer coating applied by Shanghai Baosteel using Sherwin-Williams’ Fluropon 70% PVDF Coatings, based on Kynar 500® PVDF.
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre is located seaside, along the Hong Kong Bay, surrounded hundreds of tall buildings. In fact, on July 1st, 1997, the transfer ceremony of Hong Kong to China was held at HKCEC phase II, which utilizes Sherwin-Williams’ Fluropon Classic II in Mica Silver and Fluropon in Milk White coating, both with Kynar 500® PVDF resin, as specified by the Architect, SOM. SOM specified high rise buildings with Kynar 500® resin-based coatings since from 1969, including the John Hancock Center and the Willis Towers (Sears Tower) in Chicago, One World Trade Center in New York, and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong
Kai Tak Sport Park is the largest sports and fun center in Hong Kong, covering 28 hectares of land with a 50,000-seat outdoor stadium, and 10,000-seat indoor stadium, and several shopping and dining areas. It is designed by Populous and Simon Kwan & Associates Ltd. Surrounding the large stadium, there are 27,000 pieces for aluminum. panels mixed with glass for the curtain wall. The aluminum panels are covered with Sherwin-Williams’ Fluropon coating based on Kynar 500® PVDF resin, and symbolize a pearl from the Eastern Sea. In fact, the coating can reflect out different colors under varying sunlight and LED lights.
Natatorium of Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center
Natatorium of Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center was designed by BIAD. It was designed as a butterfly with two wings covering a gymnasium and a natatorium with 400,000 square meters of Silver white coating metal roofing. It sits next to a large stadium (80,000 seats for soccer) and a smaller stadium (tennis), designed as one large lotus flower and one small lotus flower. The Kynar 500® PVDF-based coating was selected to protect the metal roofing and it is the same color for the butterfly and lotus flowers. BIAD is the leading Architect Design Institute based in Beijing and has participated in most of the larger projects in Beijing since 1949.
Infinitus Plaza in Guangzhou
The Infinitus Plaza features two towers connected by plant-covered sky bridges. The striking Zaha Hadid-designed towers are imagined as a series of rings that promote connectivity within the internal space, with an elegant facade clad of aluminum panels covered with Sherwin-Williams’ Fluropon 70% PVDF Coatings, made with Kynar 500® PVDF resin. Buro Happold was commissioned to develop the complex curved façade with aluminum. Aluminum is strong, light and easy to form any kinds of shape, and the Kynar 500® PVDF based coating gives the aluminum color options that will not chalk or fade. The Infinitus Plaza is the new Headquarter office of Infinitus, LKK health products group’s Chinese division.
