China Airport Case Studies
A brief overview of six airports protected by Kynar 500® resin-based coatings
Our partner, Sherwin-Williams China, has been a close collaborator for many years.
The case studies below are all related to coil coated steel and aluminum extrusions at major airports in China.
These are among a larger group of projects where Kynar 500® PVDF resin stands out as choice of quality and durability in for highly-visible, long lasting projects.
The six airports highlighted are:
- Shanghai Pudong International Airport,
- Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport,
- Beijing Daxing International Airport,
- Beijing Capital International Airport,
- Shenzhen Bao An International Airport,
- Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport
Located on the eastern side of Shanghai near the China Eastern Sea, the Shanghai Pudong International Airport started operation of its 1st phase in 1999. The famous French Architect Paul Andrew of ADP France designed the project. The roofing utilized a Kynar 500® PVDF-based coatings from Sherwin-Williams’ Fluropon 70% PVDF Coil Coatings collection, coated by Baosteel. Kynar 500® PVDF-based coatings were also used for inside decorative coated aluminum panels and aluminum extrusion coatings. The airport was expanded in 2008 and 2019, and the 4th phase will be ready in 2027. After 25 years of operation, the Kynar 500® PVDF-based coating retains the same color as when it was installed, still protecting the coil steel roofing! Through the four phases of airport expansion, Kynar 500® PVDF and Fluropon collection continue to be used!
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport was the original airport for Shanghai. After the Shanghai Pudong airport was built, Hongqiao was expanded, adding T2, and re-building the original T1.
Kynar 500® PVDF-based coating was used on the coil steel, coil aluminium, spray-coated aluminium profiles. It was selected because of :
- Lightness: save the cost of support structures
- Simplicity: easy and time-saving to install;
- Long life: keep the same color with no need for recoating;
- Comfort: reflect the sun’s light with low gloss.
Beijing Daxing International Airport
The new Beijing Daxing international Airport opened in 2019, with the capacity of 72 million passengers per year. It was designed by ADPI and Zaha Hadid Architect group. There are over 1 million square meters for gray roofing using Kynar 500® PVDF-based coatings, punctuated with a symbol of golden Phoenix outside. Inside, the roofing has a snow-white low-gloss coating. The golden Phoenix symbolizes the great rejuvenation and take-off of China.
Beijing Capital International Airport, T3
After opening in 1958, the Beijing Capital International Airport has kept expanding.
In February 2008, prior to the Beijing Olympic Games, Terminal 3 started operation with 1 million square meters of space. It was designed by Norman Foster, Naco and Arup and chose a coil-coated steel roof supplied by Baosteel with Sherwin-Williams’ Fluropon 70% PVDF Coil Coatings coating, a Kynar 500® PVDF-based coating. Norman Foster chose the Kynar® PVDF-based for the first metal building in Hong Kong back in 1984, The Hong Kong Shanghai Bank. Kynar 500® PVDF-based coatings have excellent performance for outdoor weathering and keeps same performance and color for over 40 years of outdoor exposures under sunlight, fog and rain.
Shenzhen Bao An Airport Satellite Hall
In 1979, the population of Shenzhen was about 0.3 million, and now it is over 21 million!
And the new Shenzhen city is also the Modern City with over 20 high-rise buidings over 300 meters high, all of which are protected by Kynar 500® PVDF coatings. Shenzhen’s Baoan airport was opened in 1991, and with expansion, and now fly 65 flights per hour!
All the facilities and terminals in the new Satellite Hall was use Kynar 500® PVDF-based coating (Sherwin-Williams Fluropon collection) to coil steel supplied by Baosteel.
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport
After the new expansion, Guangzhou’s Baiyuan International Airport will have capacity of 120 million of passages per year with 5 runways. All expansion projects used aluminium panels and extrusions covered with Kynar 500® PVDF-based coating, as well as the coil steel roofing. The town of Nanhai, in Foshan, Guangdong Province is the pionneer site of aluminum profiles and panels and supplied 70% of the need for projects in China. Most of them are covered by Kynar 500® PVDF based coating for high rise building and government projects.
