Kynar 500® PVDF Coatings Help to Keep Net-Positive Home Energy Efficient for the Long Haul.

A recently completed custom residence in New England is redefining what it means to build for the future. Not just designed for net-zero performance, this home goes a step further – producing more energy than it consumes. It blends modern efficiency with architectural elegance, all anchored by a standing seam metal roof from Englert.

The homeowner, focused on long-term energy efficiency and minimal maintenance, knew his roofing choice would be critical. He sought a system that would not only elevate the home’s appearance but would also play an active role in its energy performance. The home’s architect recommended Englert’s A1300 Metal Roof System in Charcoal Gray to provide optimal aesthetics, weather resistance, and a long service life.

Made with Galvalume (steel coated with a specialized aluminum-zinc alloy) and built to last up to 70 years, the standing seam roof helps minimize environmental impact without compromising aesthetics. Its panels are finished with PPG Duranar®, a two-coat coil coating system containing 70% Kynar 500® PVDF fluoropolymer resin, which meets the demanding AAMA-2605 performance standard.

Kynar 500® PVDF: Superior UV Resistance for Long‑Term Performance

Introduced in 1965, Kynar 500® PVDF resin-based coatings are the original high-performance finishes for architectural metal, and they remain the architect’s first choice today.
Kynar 500® PVDF resin-based coatings take advantage of one of nature’s strongest chemical bonds,” said Paul Lavallee, Global Market Manager, Kynar® 500 PVDF Coatings, Arkema Inc. “This carbon-fluorine bond is impervious to the sun’s UV radiation and won’t degrade over time.”

Use of Kynar 500® PVDF resin gives coatings excellent durability and weatherability in all environments, allowing them to resist chemical attack, UV degradation, peeling, and surface damage caused by acid rain, salt spray, and humidity. That durability and weatherability allows the coatings to resist chalking and fading, so they maintain their color over the long term; Englert offers a 35-40 year Kynar 500® PVDF finish warranty.

The coating’s solar reflectance (25% solar reflectance for this dark color) helps reflect the sun’s rays, helping homes and other buildings to stay cooler and leading to a reduction in energy bills. In fact, coatings formulated with Kynar® PVDF can lower exterior surface temperatures by as much as 32oC (58°F) and can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% as part of a total system design.

Englert is one of the few single-source metal roof manufacturers with an in-house paint line that comprises cleaning, prepping, priming, painting, and baking steps. The company, which offers dual-coated coils, adheres to a 67-point quality checklist for testing and quality control, with each coil receiving up to 20 tests to ensure the quality of color, gloss, adhesion, and durability. Random painted samples are pulled for accelerated testing of 1,000 hours.

Having our own paint line and using scratch-resistant matte paints formulated with Kynar 500® PVDF gives us strict quality control over every coil-coated product we deliver,” said Jonathan Giacchi, Marketing Manager, Englert.

Thanks to the use of PPG Duranar® coatings with Kynar 500® PVDF on the roof panels – combined with the home’s use of solar panels, continuous exterior insulation, triple-pane windows, smart appliances, heat pump HVAC and water heating and advanced air-sealing strategies – the home stays comfortable year-round while keeping energy consumption to a minimum.

This home build was a methodically thought-out project,” concluded Giacchi. “Using a Kynar 500® PVDF-based coating was a key part of the project specification, and we count on Kynar 500® PVDF for all of our coil-coated roofing systems.”
