Then and Now:
Iconic Buildings preserved with Kynar 500® resin-based Coatings

THE SHANGHAI STOCK EXCHANGE BUILDING

The Shanghai Stock Exchange building dominates the cityscape. Its design is a fascinating play on geometry and physics—a rectangular shape that towers over surrounding buildings, weaving patterns of triangles and quadrangles that evoke both awe and contemplation.

The building was the first of its kind in China, using a vast expanse of aluminum cladding that complements the design and enhances the structure’s futuristic appearance. To both underscore and preserve the building’s structure, the architects had to be certain that the coating they used would provide long-lasting durability and color retention.

PD Manufacturing International Pte., Ltd., the contractors for the building, was familiar with the superior quality of Kynar 500® PVDF-based coatings in other installations, and recommended its use for the Stock Exchange. Technical experts from Arkema proved to the architects that Kynar 500® PVDF-based coatings would provide the look, feel, and ultraviolet protection they required, without dulling or fading.

Powered by Kynar 500® resin, Sherwin-Williams’ Fluropon® coating was selected to coat the unitized curtain wall and aluminum cladding panels of the building in a metallic silver color. Completed in February 1997, the Shanghai Stock Exchange continues to shine decades later.

For over 60 years, architects and contractors the world over have specified Kynar 500® PVDF-based coatings for their durability, color retention and long-lasting beauty.

ARIA RESORT AND CASINO

The CityCenter is an urban metropolis set on 67 acres on the Last Vegas Strip. CityCenter was a design collaboration between MGM MIRAGE and eight in¬ternationally renowned architectural firms including Pelli Clarke Pelli, designers of ARIA.

CityCenter features

→ ARIA, a 61-story, 4,004-room gaming resort. The largest hotel in the world to be LEED Gold Certified.

→ Mandarin Oriental and Vdara Hotel & Spa, both luxury non-gaming hotels

→ Veer Towers, the development’s only exclusively residential building

→ Crystals, a 500,000-squarefoot retail and entertainment district

→ Harmon, a luxury boutique hotel

Baker Metal was the design engineer and Texas Finishing coated the aluminum for the ARIA Resort & Casino’s glass curtain wall that covers the exterior of the complex and other aluminum components. Baker Metal selected Sherwin-Williams Fluropon® coating, powered by Kynar 500® PVDF. “The sunshades on each floor had interesting architectural features, which made it more complex to manufacture and coat, but Texas Finishing did a superior job,” said Mary Ann Johnson, marketing manager, Sherwin-Williams Coil and Extrusion Coatings.

Even after 16 years in the Las Vegas’ taxing climate, the Aria looks outstanding.
